Web St Kilda was continuously inhabited for two millennia or more from the Bronze Age to the 20th century. It was first used instead of Hirte or Hirta on a map published in 1540 but for an island near Lewis. It has some of the highest cliffs in Europe which have large colonies of rare and endangered species of birds especially puffins and gannets.
